Genesis 19

ONE GREAT TRUTH: Since the world around us is always deteriorating into deeper sinfulness, we must set our affections on heaven and decide to escape this present evil. We must, spiritually, flee Sodom!

Warning Labels… (see pg. 2)

We need a warning label on the world around us: CAUTION: If you get to attached, you could lose your family, your testimony, and even your life! You could even miss heaven by missing the gospel!

What was the world of Sodom like? Horrible, morally speaking! It was plagued by materialism, polytheism and idolatry, sexual deviance, and violence. That sounds much like the world of our day, which becomes more accepting of unbiblical lifestyles with each passing day.

WHAT WE LOSE WHEN WE’RE TOO ATTACHED TO A SINFUL WORLD…

1.         We can lose our family.

Lot lost his future sons-in-law and his wife turned to a pillar of salt. Why? Because his family had become so attached to the world that they did not have any knowledge of or respect for God.

2.         We can lose our possessions.

Everything Lot had worked for burned up in a fire. It is even appalling that Lot would ask God to spare a “little Sodom” called Zoar to which he could flee to carve out a new life, rather than trusting God to protect him as a pilgrim in a strange land.

3.         We can lose our integrity and our influence.

Lot’s sons-in-law didn’t believe him. His daughters didn’t respect him, and his wife loved the city more than him. Why? Just look at how he threw away his integrity. He partied with these evil men, he offered them his virgin daughters, and he defiled himself with them.

Notice what we don’t lose – our salvation! Lot is still called “righteous” in the New Testament.

FIXING OUR GAZE…

Colossians 3:1-2

Lot fixed his eyes on Sodom a long time before it was destroyed. He loved all the materialism of Egypt and he wanted to live in a little Egypt called Sodom. His gaze was fixed and he took one step after another. First he looked at the plains, then he pitched his tent toward Sodom, then he moved into the city and became an influential leader. Then, he lost everything.

Abraham lived in a tent, refused to call this world his ultimate home, and he was given the great promises of God to rely on!
