Genesis 11:10-12:8

ONE GREAT TRUTH: Just as Abraham was selected and “called out” from among all the other nations on earth, we too, are called out of our culture to belong exclusively to Jesus Christ.

We’re going to see that there is a parallel between the call of Abraham and the call of every child of God today, but we’re also going to notice that it’s not just a parallel between two testaments, but that the same call given to Abraham continues on today.

I.          The Call of Abraham.

A.         He was to leave His roots. He was to leave the influence of the home of his idolatrous father and remove himself to a land where God could use him. Abraham grew up in Ur, a Babylonian city of learning. They used the arch in building and four-wheeled vehicles, but they were also terribly idolatrous.

B.         He was to become a great nation. The problem was he had no children of his own, which we’ll see solved as we journey through the life of Abraham.

C.         He was to be a blessing to all the earth. That is, from his descendents would come the promised Savior. God’s purpose remains for all the world to hear the good news of Jesus!

D.         He was called to be a worshipper. He built an altar at the place later named “house of God” and worshipped his God there.

II.         The Call of Every Believer.

A.         We are called to salvation. (John 10:16) Though salvation is available to all, and though there is a universal “call” issued every time the gospel is presented, there is a personal sense in which God calls each of His children individually to salvation.

B.         We are called to separation. (1 Peter 2:9) We are called to be exclusively God’s in this world. The very definition of the word “church” is “a called out assembly.”

C.         We are called to service. (Matthew 28:18-20) That is, we are called to be a blessing to all the earth by telling everyone about the salvation available in Jesus Christ.

D.         We are called to sacrifice. (Romans 12:1-2) Our worship is a living, daily kind of sacrifice.

Have you listened to the call of God on your life? Perhaps He’s calling you to be saved tonight? to be separate from this world? to serve Him in some capacity? or to live your life as a living sacrifice?
