The Scarlet Thread (Part One): LOST

Genesis 3:8-13
ONE GREAT TRUTH: Because of the reality of sin, we are hopelessly lost, but God is on a search and rescue mission for our souls. We can be found if we’re simply willing.
Genesis 3 introduces the most important theme of Scripture: the scarlet thread of the blood of Christ’s redemption. This thread weaves its way through all of history and all of God’s revealed Word.
I. We need to face our condition.
Because of sin’s entrance, Adam and Eve became painfully aware of their hopelessness and shame. We are aware as well, but we try to deal with sin in all the wrong ways… because we’re lost.
A. We feel shame, so we try to cover up. (v. 7)
B. We feel fear, so we try to hide. (vs. 8, 10)
C. We are separated, so God comes to find us. (v. 9)
Christianity is not really about man’s quest for God but about God’s quest for man. Jesus was God, becoming flesh, that He might find His creatures and draw them back to Himself.
Luke 19:10
II. We need to answer God’s call.
“Adam, where are you?” was one of the saddest questions ever asked. God did not have amnesia and He was not unaware of Adam’s physical location. But He made it a point to demonstrate the distance between himself and sinful humanity.
God’s call has two sides…
A. Conviction. God brings sin to our attention and confronts us with our unholiness. Adam and Eve both play the blame game. Eve blames the serpent. Adam blames Eve, and indirectly, God too.
Romans 2:4; 2 Corinthians 7:10
B. Invitation. He calls us back to Himself. He has come on a quest for us, but in the end, He leaves the decision with us as to what to do with His call. Will you come to Jesus?
Matthew 11:28-30; Revelation 22:17
